What it involves
Seat Wall, done properly
Seat walls are built at sitting height with a smooth cap on top, so they are comfortable without a cushion and there is nothing to drag out of the garage or bring in before a storm. Around a fire pit they turn a patio into a gathering space that can hold a crowd without a single folding chair.
We build them from segmental block with a matching or contrasting cap, or from natural stone where the rest of the yard calls for it. The wall is set on the same compacted base as the patio and pinned or adhered course by course, so it stays plumb and the cap stays flat.
Because the wall is a structural element, it is worth planning at the same time as the patio: we can set the patio border to die into the wall cleanly, run the wall as a step down to a lower level, or leave a gap where a path needs to pass through.
Comfortable sitting height
Built and capped so the wall is genuinely usable as seating — the right height, a flat cap and a face that does not catch the back of your legs.
Ties the patio together
The wall gives the patio a finished edge and a backdrop, and it holds a mulch bed or a change in grade behind it at the same time.

Set on compacted aggregate and secured course by course, not stacked dry on top of a finished surface.
Detail options

How tall should a seat wall be?
Around the height of a dining chair seat, including the cap — that is the range where a wall is comfortable to sit on for an evening rather than just to perch on. If a wall also needs to hold back soil we will look at whether one wall can do both jobs or whether you are better off with a separate retaining wall behind it.
Can a seat wall wrap around a fire pit?
That is the most common way we build them. A wall that wraps two or three sides of a fire pit gives you seating all the way around while leaving an opening for people to walk in and out, and it keeps the fire area feeling contained.
Can you add a seat wall to a patio I already have?
Often, yes — but it depends on what is under the edge of the existing patio. We would need to look at how the patio was built and whether there is a base under the wall line to build on. If there is not, we can usually excavate a footing along the edge and tie the new wall in.
Do seat walls need lighting?
They do not need it, but a hardscape light recessed under the cap is one of the better upgrades you can make. It lights the seating and the patio surface without a fixture at eye level, and it makes the wall visible after dark so nobody walks into it.
