A garden wall is the low, decorative cousin of a retaining wall: it lifts a planting bed, edges a lawn or terraces a gentle slope, and it makes the yard look deliberate.

Garden Walls, done properly
Garden walls are usually built low enough that they are not doing serious structural work, which means the priorities are different from a retaining wall: the line has to be right, the courses have to be level, and the cap has to read as one continuous surface from the driveway.
Raised beds built this way drain better than beds cut into clay, they keep mulch where you put it, and they give a mower a clean edge to run against instead of a hand-trimmed line that never looks tidy for long.
We build them in segmental block with a matching cap, or in natural stone where the house or the existing landscape calls for it. Even on a low wall we still excavate and compact a base — a garden wall set straight onto soil will move with the first wet season.

Lifting a bed out of heavy clay gives roots somewhere to go and stops water sitting around the crown of a plant.
A clean line for the lawn
A capped wall gives the mower a hard edge to follow, so the bed keeps its shape without constant trimming.
Terracing gentle slopes
Two low walls will often make a mild slope usable and interesting where one tall wall would look heavy.

Garden Walls: the questions we get asked
What is the difference between a garden wall and a retaining wall?
It comes down to how much soil the wall is holding. A garden wall is low and mostly decorative — it raises a bed or edges a lawn. A retaining wall is holding a real load of earth back and has to be engineered for it, with drainage stone, a filter fabric and often geogrid tied back into the slope. If a wall on your property is holding more than a course or two of soil, we will build it as a retaining wall regardless of what it is called.
What materials do you build garden walls from?
Segmental concrete block with a matching or contrasting cap is the most common, because the color range is wide and the courses stay tight. Natural stone is the other option, and it suits older homes and informal planting. We will bring samples to the estimate so you are choosing from something you can hold rather than a screen.
Do you plant the beds as well?
We do landscaping alongside our hardscape work — beds, soil, plants, mulch and sod. Building the wall and planting the bed on the same job saves you coordinating two trades, and it means the wall gets set at the right height for what is going in behind it.
How long does a garden wall take to build?
It depends on the length, the number of corners and how much excavation the site needs — a short bed wall on flat ground is a very different job from a terraced run on a slope. We will give you a schedule with your estimate, and if weather or an unexpected site condition moves it, you will hear about it from us rather than find out on the day.
